On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand

This hymn was written by Edward Mote while a pastor at Rehoboth Baptist Church on Horsham, West Sussex.  Mote wrote about 100 hymn texts, this one being written in1834; this is his best known hymn. The text was first published anonymously in several hymn collections before being attributed to Mote in a collection of approximately 100 of his hymns published in 1837.  The original title was "The Immutable Basis for a Sinner's Hope," in the collection.

The refrain of "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less" refers to the parable of the Wise and the Foolish Builder.  It was built around the metaphor of Christ as a rock with a firm basis in scripture (1 Corinthians 10:4).
